When helping your children at home it is really important to keep things simple and fun. Follow their interests. If you end up steering away from your planned activity that is absolutely fine. Build on this and keep asking lots of questions.
Read, read, read and read some more! Encourage you children to read everything from food packaging and recipe books to age appropriate magazines and newspaper articles. Ask them a range of questions and share stories with them.
Make the most of the resources around your house. Within the classroom teachers are not able to offer the same level of practical learning, with a class of thirty, that you can offer at home. Involve your children in weighing out the ingredients when cooking, compare the sizes of pots and containers in your cupboards and take cereal boxes apart to look at their nets. Set up a shop and use real money. If in doubt, look at a workbook, worksheet or online activity and ask yourself ‘Can I recreate this in real life?’
